Nick’s Picks- US Open Mens 1st round

The US Open is finally here. I have looked at the draw and had a tough time picking the matches that I was going to pick. There are too many great matches in the first round. Here are some you should watch out for.

There is some chatter going around that the courts are sort of bubbly and causing erratic bounces. My tip to all the players- SO WHAT! thats why you change sides. Remember making excuses is not acceptable.

Men’s

Roger Federer (SUI) vs. Donald Young (USA)

This will be a very interesting match if Donald Young plays the match of his life. Keep in mind that he turned pro when he was barely a teenager and there were differing opinions on his decision.

There has never been a question to his ability of becoming a top ranked player but his physical workouts were always a question mark. He is a lefty and can turn it on in so many ways but he has to start playing from point one. It is a must that he has a positive attitude and plays every point aggressively.

Donald had a super 2011 Open, losing to Andy Murray in the 4th round.

Roger Federer is so special both on and off the court. There is no doubt in my mind that he is the smooth as silk player that can do it all without even breaking a sweat.

His backhand is much more aggressive and he comes up with the big serve when needed. There is no need to say much more about his super forehand and movement.

Nick’s Pick- Donald must play big and I mean big! This match goes to Federer.

David Ferrer (ESP) vs Kevin Anderson (RSA)

DO NOT charge David by his size (5’9”) and also his age (30). Yes you read it correctly when you saw him seeded No.4.

He is a grinder, does not give you the time of day and will force you to overhit.

Kevin Anderson is from down-under and is a big hitter with a huge serve. He must play aggressive but cannot go for just winners. He must have a big serving day and try serve-volleying a few times.

I watched Kevin Anderson practice, he is a big big boy. Huge serve but must use his legs a little bit more on the ground strokes. Must get below the ball to get a little spin for safety. Could be very dangerous and on any given day could knock off a top seed.

Nick’s Pick- David Ferrer will drive Kevin nuts and that is the factor that gives him the edge in this match. My tip for Kevin is to attack and attack some more. Your chances of beating him from the baseline are slim to none.

Tommy Haas (GER) vs Ernest Gulbis (LAT)

Tommy Haas has come a long way and I mean a long way- not too long ago his ranking was in the 300’s and many thought he was finished. He is 34 and has had 3 major shoulder injuries.

Not so with Tommy or with me. He has been with me since he was 13 years old. When he makes up his mind to do something he does it.

He has many strengths, including:  his great shape, hes a big man, excellent serve, excellent forehand, he has one of the best backhands ever and he is very comfortable at the net.

Ernest is 6’3”, only 23 years old and is also in great physical shape. He was one of the young ones that many thought would be a top 10 player for sure. He has big strokes and a big serve. On a good day he could beat anyone in the world.

Nick’s Pick- Tommy must not get behind in this match and will use his very effective low slice to break down the rhythm of Gulbis. He must also have a darn good serving day and come into the net whenever possible. Tommy will also hit several drop shots. This one goes to Tommy in 4 tough sets.

David Goffin (BEL) vs. Thomas Berdych (CZE)

David has earned a reputation of “watch out for me. I may not be a giant physically but I am no roll over.“

He has a darn good all-around game with way above average forehands and backhands. He is not big in size but he also has a consistent-well placed serve. Movement is one of his main assets.

Thomas is a big boy (6’5”) and is very athletic at 26 years old. He can do it all with a super forehand and a backhand that catches you off guard when hitting it down the line.

He does not hesitate to come attack the net. He loves to hit with power and this can cost him crucial points.

Nick’s Pick- Thomas has come a long way including controlling his emotions. Oh Yes! Look for Thomas to go well into the 2nd week. Last year he lost in the 3rd round
